Holden goes off on many rants that are easy to ignore. They, however, are what provide insight into not only his values and beliefs, but also the social criticism that is at the heart of this novel. Read through your rant and analyze his thought process by answering the following questions:

On page 19, Holden goes on a rant about the boy who lives in the dorm room next to his own, Ackley. He describes Ackley as a pimple faced intruder who never brushes his teeth and insists on annoying Holden without invitation. In this rant he subconsciously reflects on his own habits that are shown later on in the novel. ie, he asks something of Ackley many times and gets annoyed when Ackley ignores his demands yet later when Ackley asks him to turn off the lights he continues to ignore his requests. This is also the first rant when Holden rants about someone his own age which helps illustrate the fact that he is talking about many of his own personnel traits. It connects to the theme that life goes around in a continuous circle, he complains about someone else yet manages to annoy that person by doing the exact same thing.

Holden is literally saying that he is an exhibitionist, and since he is very talented in tap dancing he should have a grand audience to put on a show for. What Holden is actually doing is using his talent as a gateway for people to pay attention and acknowledge him.

1. He is literally saying that Stradlater appears as a nice, clean person but in reality he is secretly a slob and a bad person.

Pages 49. Holden is literally talking about how his roommate Stradlater is sexually abusing his date in the back of the car and how Stradlater is not a good person. Perhaps he is talking about something larger in the way that Holden has kept his innocence. Yet Stradlater has lost his innocence by fooling around with other girls and taking the innocence of his dates. Also, Holden is talking about something larger with Stradlater in the way that he is a teachers pet. At the school you are not aloud to borrow a teachers car, yet, Stradlater is a phony because he pretends to be good to the teacher yet he is using the car to do bad things. That Holden is innocent, and Stradlater is a phony.

1. He is saying that he doesn't want to conform to everyone else, and how he can`t stand being around people who do conform to society. This could apply to society saying how you shouldn't trust people who do not show their real selves.
