Holden spends much of the novel appearing to go on and on about nothing of importance. Agree? However, these rants and fixations are actually the most revealing parts in the novel, especially at the end when it is all coming together. It takes close reading to figure out exactly what Holden is commenting on when he fixates on something.

In this rant Holden talks about how every time during an oral presentation when the person went off topic the teachers would yell, "Digression!"

After Holden wakes up from Mr.Antolini touching him, he gathers his belongings and leaves. His nervousness and sweat implies that something like this has happened before. "When something perverty like that happens, I start sweating like a bastard." (193). He explains that people at his school were always "perverty" around him. "I know more damn perverts, at schools and all, than anybody you ever met, and they're always being perverty when I'm around" (192 Salinger). Mr. Antolini was one of the few people left that he trusted and after this part in the novel everything Holden thought who he was was comprised. It was another loss for Holden and he felt extremely betrayed and confused.

What Holden likes about the museum is that it never changes. The exhibits in the glass cases are always in the same position as if frozen in time. Holden also says how he likes that you have changed in small insignificant ways each time that you return to the museum. Holden explains how you would change but after brushes it off and says he doesn't want to explain even though he just did. Holden also mentions that his parents are not happy and have fights. This a quick one line that he glosses over but reveals more onto why Holden behaves the way he does. He sees the adults in his life as unhappy and doesn't want to become them. This shows how Holden wants to preserve the past and things not to change but he doesn't mind small changes like changes in clothes. It also reveals his love of childhood and desire to preserve innocence as the museum is something he associates with his and Phoebe's elementary school. Holden's insistence that time should stop might stem from the fact that growing up means dying and he's seen so much death already. Also he feels in getting older he grows away from Allie who is stuck as a child. This whole is more of the Holden philosophy that people should hold on to their childhood innocence.

When Holden rants about 'The Catcher in the Rye" he reveals his true feelings about his desire to protect innocence by catching children as they fall from a cliff. Falling off the cliff metaphorically refers to the descent from innocence into adulthood. Holden wants to rebel against society and not allow children to fall into the trap that is society's phony mold. He feels as though it is his responsibility to prolong innocent childhood for the young children that play in the field of Rye. Holden glosses over the fact that he got the song lyrics wrong and therefore his entire point is irrelevant. This rant shows how truly messed up Holden's mind is where his answer for what career he wants is to stand on the edge of a cliff and catch children. This obviously is not a real career and a very psychologically concerning life goal. This rant is what gives the book its title and is therefore crucial to the story and who Holden is as a character. This coincides with the themes of innocence, protection, and mental illness.

We read the rant about the movies on page 138. Throughout this rant Holden is describing what is going on throughout a movie. He talks about how he does not like it and how it's stereotypical by stating, that he "could've puked"(Salinger 138). This shows that Holden does not conform to society and doesn't agree with their norms and expectations. However, one can infer that this is his way of putting up a wall and defending himself. The people in this movie all have others to listen to them and love them while he does not, which is why we think he is constantly putting it down. As well, later, he talks about phonies and specifically the lady beside him. He didn't like that she was crying from the movie, even though he had said "she was about as kindhearted as a god damn wolf" (Salinger 140). This shows that he finds the majority of things in life to be fake while still wanting the connections.
